My Humorous Monologue

BartonD_comedy from Kapaa Middle School MEDIA on Vimeo.

So far I have learned that trying to be funny isn't easy, It takes a lot of thinking and planning. People think comedians have an easy life, not really because they need to know what makes things funny, those are some of the things I learned. But there is more, I've also learned that when putting b-roll over a-roll its challenging, it's not like you can just snap your fingers and poof it's done, nope thats not at all how it works. Even though I have done this before it's still a challenge because you need to remember all the steps and tricks, I mean sure it's easy for some people, but not everyone. I have also learned that when you tell a funny story that already happen, its not easy to recreate.

Ever heard of padding your videos? I never did till now, so padding is when you add extra second at the beginning and ending of a video. Padding your clips is crucial because if you don't wait for those extra (at least 5) seconds then you could cut off some of the words that you are saying at the beginning or ending. So when recording you say "rolling" count 5 seconds then say "action", then the person would start speaking. Then when you finish your recording you say "cut" then wait 5 seconds and stop the video.

For this comedy project I had many weaknesses, some of which was recreating me putting cake on my priest and vice versa. Another one of my weaknesses was getting footage of the first birthday party, though my priest moved mountains for me to get that footage. My priest Ryan Newman was a great help, also other church members, such as Uncle David Murray, and Anna Yu. My strength was being able to adjust all the footage I had to match my monologue, though for one of my b-roll, I wasn't able to get a footage of the church. Some ways I feel I could improve is by having prepared and plan better.

Comedy Writing

Has anyone ever told you,you have a great sense of humor? Sometimes people tell me that, but not a lot. If you have a great sense of humor you are always positive and happy and cheerful. It all depends on how the day is. So why is sense of humor an important trait?, I feel its an important trait, because when you are funny you tend to make other peoples days better. For example if someone is all sad because a family member died, you could be funny and make that person feel like that person never left, they just became their guardian angel. I can really relate to that example because when my grandmother passed on Valentines, one of my many uncles said at least grandma and grandpa are together,he is probably walking her to the heaven gate right now. But having sense of humor is a great character trait to have.

How to write a humorous narrative. Well for starters, your asking the wrong person, just kidding I do know how to write a humorous narrative. Number one, its all in the voice. When telling a joke, you need to have a straight face and a professional voice. You can't giggle or chuckle in between telling your joke. Number two, comparing your joke becomes your best friend. Comparing jokes are the easiest, because there can be unexpected metaphors. Also comedy is really hard, so this is your next best option. Number three, if you say something that you think isn't funny, but its funny to your friends, write it down so you can remember it for something else, its called stealing from yourself. Number four, do you love surprises, well thats tip number four. Humor is all in the surprise,it needs to be unexpected for it to be funny. Finally number five humor isn't for everyone, it depends on who the person your telling the joke to is. So always remember humor isn't for everyone.

My comedic monologue is about me putting cake on my priest face. It's funny because normally you don't expect people to put cake on a person, who runs a church, especially on church grounds. But technically the priest started it, I just finished it. But to be honest, my priest still acts like he is a teenager, which is sometimes fun,but not always. So I think my monologue is funny because, I'm a 13 year old girl, putting cake frosting on her priest face, when other people are around. Also I think it's funny because it all started with a little 1 year getting frosting on her face, and then it comes to a 13 year old,and ends with the priest, who is in his 30's. But anyway, thats why I think my monologue is funny. Tell me what you think, when I post the video.

Motivational Poster

There are a lot of projects this year, but for now this project is our Motivational Poster. The requirements for our motivational posters are for all our layers we must have a total of 4 images, 3 in which symbols that represent us and 1 portrait image of ourself. For our text layer, we must have a total of 2 text layers; one is our manifesto and the other is our personal quotes. The expectations for our design is all text must be kerned, so it can fit across the entire page, they must not be any blank spaces or holes. Another expectation is that we must have a triadic color scheme meaning 1 dominant and 2 harmonious accent colors. Also blending options for text,we can't forget those, so we needed drop shadow, stroke, outer glow, bevel, and emboss. Our final requirement is adjustment layers for our images, our main requirement for this is the color balance, other things like levels, curves, and exposure were optional.

So the first step to creating this motivational poster is thinking of personal quotes and your own manifesto. It is also about thinking what symbols represent you, oh and I almost forgot you also need a picture of yourself (Selfie). The second step is to upload your pictures into your computer, third is to create a file in photoshop. So first you can start with either your personal quotes or manifesto, its your choice. Also maybe type your personal quotes or manifesto on a google document before typing it in photoshop because photoshop doesn't have auto-correct. After this you can arrange your personal quotes or manifesto whatever way you prefer, I just chose to put my personal quotes on top and my manifesto on the bottom. Once you have your words arrange, you have to kern your words so its looks amazing, you can look on the internet to see how other people kerned their manifestos. After this you open up your photos into photoshop, then use the move tool to drag and drop you images onto the same document with your words. Turn off your words and arrange your pictures to your style. Also if you need to arrange the image size remember to hold down shift, so your image doesn't look wonky. Lastly you add effects to your words and images, to make the image look great, you must have color balance, its where you have 1 dominant and 2 harmonious accent colors. So after all this is done, you should have an amazing poster. Have fun in making this.

My biggest challenge was kerning the words perfectly. I tried everything,I resized the words, re-kerned the words over and over, but somehow I wasn't able to make my words go from one end of the page to the other. How I would improve this is probably to think of more words, but I wasn't able to think of anything else. So I worked with what I had,I kept resizing, re-kerning, and then I just did the best I could do, with what I had. So i guess that was just my biggest challenge, it was the words.
